In journalist Naomi Klein’s ninth novel Doppelganger, she documents her experience being mistaken by the public for her political opposite, Naomi Wolf, a feminist-turned-conspiracy theorist who happens to look just like her. Through examinations of Wolf’s rhetoric and the platforms she occupies, a common thread of rhetorical manipulation is revealed. This book revolves comparisons between so-called ‘mirror worlds,’ or how social media, corporatization, and politicics are fragmented and distorted depending on

This is a memoir from the daughter of former family vlogger Ruby Franke. Ruby was the mastermind behind the Eight Passengers Youtube channel, and was recently convicted of child abuse towards her six children. This popular channel documented the goings-on within the Franke household, from the kids losing their first tooth to more sensitive, private topics like shaving for the first time and being disciplined. As a result of these hundreds of videos that were made public, Ruby has faced a lot of scrutiny for her often excessive and tyrannical parenting methods. This book looks past the shiny facade that was presented online, delving deeper into the truth of what it was like to be a passenger.

The focus of this book is the Flynn family and their three daughters. We are first introduced to the parents: Bud, who is going through a midlife depressive crisis, and the wistful Catherine, who constantly aspires to true love, beauty, and meaning beyond motherhood. Then there’s Harper, the conspiracy theorist of the siblings; Louise, who’s being groomed online by a terrorist;

Twenty-four-year-old Rachel, an irreverent former Jew from Los Angeles, lives a life defined by routine. Day to day, she maintains an illusory sense of control through compulsive exercise and calorie restriction. When her therapist suggests 90 days of no contact with her toxic mother, she becomes enamored with an Orthodox woman named Miriam, who happens to work at her neighborhood frozen yogurt shop. While Rachel is hell-bent on maintaining her self-destructive tendencies, Miriam insists on feeding her. As their relationship blossoms, the narrator embarks on a quest of self-discovery, hoping to find closure with her fraught and traumatic upbringing. This sapphic “examination of life under the tyranny of diet culture,” according to Glamour Magazine, is incredibly surreal in its narration, delving into appetites in their many forms - the desire for physical sustenance, sexual intimacy, and a higher power. In contrast to the prosaic diction is an amalgamation of dark humor, comic expletives, and pertinent cultural insights, all of which culminate in devastatingly beautiful moments of betrayal, devastation, and reckoning for the main character. Ultimately, it speaks to the hidden desires of the modern woman by zooming in on her internal strife. It’s a story of letting go - of the misbeliefs that hold us back and the healing fantasies we attach to nonreciprocal relationships. A warning to sensitive readers: Melissa Broder’s language can be graphic.

Grounded in foundations of Latinx culture, Esquivel’s novel is an unforgettable tale of passion and pain - having the effect of a telenovela on steroids, or, as stated by the narrator, “the secrets of love and life as revealed by the kitchen.”

From Sylvia Plath, author of The Bell Jar, is this curated selection of her most visceral poetry. Using dynamic imagery of the human body, domesticity, and the natural world, she conveys her inner struggles to the reader in a way that is distinctly modern despite being written in the 1960s. This book also reveals a lot about Plath’s personal history. In her piece entitled “Daddy,” she reveals the emotional neglec
