Lonesome Dove

Synopsis

After Jake Spoon commits murder, he goes on the run and winds up in old stomping grounds—a sleepy little town called Lonesome Dove. He is reunited with other former Texan rangers, primarily the stoic head honcho Call and his spirited comrade Gus. Jake’s reappearance becomes an unexpected catalyst for the Hat Creek Cattle Company’s epic tale of adventure, and along with their employees, they embark on a cattle drive towards Montana through extreme weather, unpredictable Natives, and past lovers and rivals. As they inch closer to their destination, they are faced with the question of whether or not Montana will be the land of paradise that Jake promised.

Review

Despite this book being nearly a thousand pages, I absolutely flew through it and didn’t want it to end. The author McMurtry’s biggest achievement lies in his characterizations. You can’t help but love each one despite their inconsistencies, egotistical facades and past mistakes. Their individual growth unfolds throughout their journey, revealing a group of men who, while outwardly masculine, are inwardly vulnerable, tender, and honest. This book is about diverging from the familiar, bravery, faith, following one's heart and the power for small actions to impact the future. I look forward to reading the rest of the series soon.
